Yukon Single Trip Oversize/Overweight Permits

A general single-trip permit is issued for non-divisible oversized and overweight loads exceeding the legal limits. It covers one movement from point A to point B during the running times specified in the permit. The permit expires at the end of the trip, so you may need to request a return trip permit.

The cost of the permit starts at $15.

Yukon Annual Oversize/Overweight Permits

Yukon hasn’t published information about annual OSOW permits, which would allow unrestricted movement for up to 365 days during the running times specified in the permit. However, it offers multiple-trip permits for $25 per month for up to 6 months in a line,

Note: Considerations such as axle weight, axle spacing, tire sizes, and the number of tires are also assessed and may necessitate an additional overweight permit.

Yukon Wide Load Requirements

All vehicles/loads wider than 8′ 6.36″ (2.6 m) require an oversize permit.

Oversize Load Flag Requirements:

All sides and extremities of oversized vehicles and loads must be marked with square flags of red(rear) or orange(front) color, with sides at least 300 mm in length at the extremities of all overwidth and overlength loads.

Oversize Load Banner Requirements:

The use of “D,”  “Wide Load,” “Long Load,” or “Oversize Load” signs is required.

Oversize Load Sign Requirements:

  • Length of 150 cm (240 cm for “D”signs) and height of 30 cm.
  • The lettering should be 20 cm high.

Oversize Load Lighting Requirements:

A 360-degree amber warning light is mandated for vehicles transporting loads, positioned at the front of the vehicle and on the roof of escort vehicles. It must meet specific visibility criteria:

  • The light must offer a minimum visibility of 300 meters (984 feet) in all directions.
  • It should flash at a rate between 60 to 90 flashes per minute.
  • The minimum mounting height for these lights is 1.5 meters (5 feet) from the highway.

Clearance Lights:

  • Firmly mounted at all four corners, extremities, or protrusions of overdimensional load. Red on the rear, amber on the front.

Oversize Pilot Cars and Escort Vehicles Requirements:

Width-based Escort Requirements:

  1. More than 3.2 meters wide:
    • Requires one escort vehicle traveling in front of the overdimensional vehicle.
  2. More than 3.8 meters wide:
    • Requires two escort vehicles: one in front and one at the rear of the overdimensional vehicle.
  3. More than 4.9 meters wide:
    • Requires two escort vehicles: one in front and one at the rear of the overdimensional vehicle.
    • A Yukon Government Carrier Compliance vehicle may be required if specified by the permit.

Length-based Escort Requirements:

  1. More than 27.5 meters long:
    • Requires one escort vehicle traveling at the rear of the overdimensional vehicle.
  2. More than 36 meters long:
    • Requires two escort vehicles: one in front and one at the rear of the overdimensional vehicle.

Notes:

  • If a vehicle’s height necessitates moving overhead wires, at least one escort vehicle must be in front of the overdimensional vehicle.
  • For load extensions, one escort vehicle is generally required in front if the front or rear projection exceeds specific measurements.
  • For any vehicle that combines significant length, width, and height or load extension, the highest level of warning devices and escort requirements must be applied.
  • Specific permit conditions may override these general requirements, potentially necessitating additional warning devices, escort vehicles, or the specification of travel routes and times.
  • Vehicles over 3.2 meters wide and up to 4.4 meters wide may be escorted at any time of day or night on (a) the Alaska Highway from the B.C./Yukon border at kilometer 1008 to Whitehorse; (b) the South Klondike Highway (#2); (c) the Haines Road (#3); (d) the North Klondike Highway; (e) the Dempster Highway from kilometer 0 to the Yukon/NWT border.
