Wyoming Oversize/Overweight Regulations
According to Wyoming law, any load exceeding the following weight and size limits is considered an oversize/overweight load:
Legal Size Limit:
- Width: 8′ 6″ (from the outside points of the widest extremities, excluding safety devices)
- Height: 14′ (from the roadbed to the highest point of the load or vehicle, whichever is higher)
- Overall length (vehicle combinations): 85′ (from the foremost point of the vehicle or load, whichever extends further, to the rearmost point of the vehicle or load, whichever extends further)
- Semi-trailer length: 48′ (from the foremost point of the vehicle or load, whichever extends further, to the rearmost point of the vehicle or load, whichever extends further)
Legal Weight Limit:
- Maximum gross weight: 80,000 lb.; 117,000 lb. – interstate (including the weight of the load)
- Single axle: 20,000 lb.
- Tandem axle: 36,000 lb.
- Triple axle: 42,500 lb.
- Each wheel: 10,000 lb.
Wyoming Single Trip Oversize/Overweight Permits
A general single-trip permit is issued for non-divisible oversize and overweight loads exceeding the legal limits. It covers one movement from point A to point B during the running times specified in the permit. You may require a separate permit to be brought back to the original location. The fee starts at $15 and varies depending on the permit.

Wyoming Annual Oversize/Overweight Permits
Wyoming typically does not provide annual permits, instead it offers 90-day permits, which conditions vary depending on the load and vehicle.
Typical requirements:
- maximum width – 12′ (class D); 18′ (class B and C)
- maximum height – 15′ (class D); 17′ (class B and C)
- maximum length – 120′
- maximum GVW – 160,000 lb.
- maximum single axle weight – 25,000 lb.
- maximum single axle weight in a tandem axle – 29,000 lb.
- maximum tandem axle weight – 55,000 lb.
- maximum triple axle weight – 65,000 lb.
The fee varies by the type of permit.
Wyoming Wide Load Requirements
All loads wider than 8′ 6″ require an oversized permit issued by the Wyoming Department of Transportation.
Oversize Load Flag Requirements:
All sides and extremities of oversized vehicles and loads must be marked with red or fluorescent orange 12″ square flags.
Additionally, if the rear overhang is 4 feet or more, use one flag if it’s less than 2 feet wide, and use two flags if it’s wider than 2 feet.
Oversize Load Banner Requirements:
All oversize vehicles must be equipped with “oversize load” banners(signs).
Oversize Load Sign Requirements:
5′ long and 10″ high signs with 8″ high black letters on the yellow background.
Oversize Load Lighting Requirements:
All wide loads require amber clearance lights on the front corners and red lights at the back of the load, as well as on any extremities or projections. Additionally, the vehicle must have an amber rotating, flashing, or strobe light. Overlength vehicles must feature a red lamp and reflector on each rear corner or extremity of any rear overhang.
Oversize Pilot Cars or Escort Vehicles Requirements:
Width: Escorts needed on two-lane roads for width exceeding 14ft, or 15ft on interstate/four-lane with left turn lane.
Length: Escorts for 110ft+ on two-lane roads; discretion on interstate.
Rear Overhang: Rear escort needed for overhang of 25ft+.
Height: Escorts for 17ft+ with measuring device; discretion for lower heights.
Overweight: Rear escort required; front escort may be needed.
Wyoming Wide Load Restrictions
All loads wider than 8′ 6″ are subject to the following restrictions:
Oversize Holiday Restrictions:
Unless otherwise mentioned in Wyoming wide load permits, oversized loads cannot be transported on New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. Additional restrictions apply if any of the holidays falls on Saturday or Sunday.
Oversize Legal Travel Times Restrictions:
Permitted vehicles can move half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset, except for:
- permitted combination units up to 110′
- single units up to 75′
- loads not exceeding 10′ wide on Interstates
- escorted vehicle/loads wider than 10′ on Interstates or 8.5′ on primary/secondary roads.
Oversize Road and Bridge Restrictions:
Wyoming adheres to the Federal Bridge Formula that provides specific bridge restrictions. As for the oversize road restrictions, they include but are not limited to the following:
- driving through work zones that are under construction
- neglecting warning signals when driving through work zones
- not giving traffic priority to law enforcement, emergency vehicles, etc
Note: All vehicles, including driven and towed must comply with posted bridge weight limits.
Oversize Seasonal Weight Restrictions:
While the Frost Law is applied in many states and provinces of Canada, no specific seasonal restrictions are provided by the state of Wyoming. However, they may appear in Wyoming oversize load permits, arising from the nature and type of the load.
Note: When a “no unnecessary travel advisory” is in effect, oversize loads cannot travel. An enroute load may only go to the nearest parking area or town and must not continue beyond these points unless authorized by the Wyoming Highway Patrol.

Wyoming sticks to the Federal legal width limit of 8′ 6″. Everything wider requires a permit to be moved on public roads.

Oversize Tire Regulations:
Tires must be in normal operating condition, properly inflated, and feature the minimum tread depth of 2/32″ (4/32″ for steering wheels).
The maximum permitted weight is 650 lb. (750 lb. for steering tires) per tire inch of width.
Tires must not feature protuberances of any material other than rubber or tire chains unless their use is required for safety or permitted.
Wyoming Trip Permits
The state of Wyoming allows out-of-state operators and carriers to obtain a 96- hour IRP permit for $20 (single unit) or $40 (vehicle combinations). There is also a fee for handling and processing your permit request.
Wyoming Fuel Permits
The state of Wyoming allows out-of-state operators and carriers to obtain a 96-hour IFTA permit for $7.5 (single unit) or $15 (vehicle combinations). There is also a fee for handling and processing your permit request.

Superloads permits are required for loads exceeding:
- width 18′ (class B and C)

- triple axle weight – 65,000 lb.
Note: Loads wider than 18′ require a 24-hour prior notification by the carrier.
Amber Light Permits:
Vehicles escorting oversize loads shall be equipped with roof-mounted amber warning lights.
Loading Zone Permits:
A loading zone permit may be issued for using commercial loading zones by non-commercial delivery vehicles.

Oversize/Overweight Load Fines in Wyoming
Oversize and overweight fines in Wyoming depend on the weight exceeding the maximum legal weight.
First violation incurs no penalty, but subsequent violations will face penalties starting from $120.
The standard deposit schedule for commercial vehicle violation appearances includes $20.00 Court Costs + $10.00 Court Automation Fee, and a $10.00 civil legal services fee, as set by court rule or statutory authority.
Progressive scale:
- first 2,000 lb. overweight – $65.00
- 2,001 – 4,000 lb. overweight – $115.00
- 4,001 – 6,000 lb. overweight – $165.00

- 20,001 and more lb. overweight – $1,040.00.
