Nunavut Wide Load Requirements

Before moving oversized loads (including those that are too wide, too tall, too long, or too heavy) or transporting oversized vehicles, the driver must obtain the appropriate permits. These permits for traveling on Nunavut highways are granted according to the guidelines set forth by the Motor Vehicles Act and the Large Vehicle Control Regulations.

The terms of the permit might require the inclusion of a pilot car, along with flags, signs, or lights, which the permit holder must supply.

Oversize Load Flag Requirements:

All sides and extremities of oversized vehicles and loads must be marked with square flags of fluorescent orange color, with sides at least 410 mm in length at the extremities of all overwidth and overlength loads.

Oversize Load Banner Requirements:

Vehicles must display a “WIDE LOAD” sign mounted on the top of the cab.

Oversize Load Sign Requirements:

As provided inĀ

https://www.gov.nu.ca/sites/default/files/documents/2022-12/edt_2021_mv_professionalmanual.pdf

Oversize Load Lighting Requirements:

The headlights and tail lights should be illuminated at all times while transporting oversize loads.

Oversize Pilot Cars and Escort Vehicles Requirements:

A pilot vehicle may be necessary depending on the width of the road and other geographical features along the route.

When a pilot vehicle is used, it should travel 1,000 to 1,500 feet ahead of the vehicle being towed. If a trailing vehicle is needed, it should maintain a safe following distance of up to 1,000 feet from the towed vehicle, allowing enough room for other vehicles to safely pass and occupy the space.

Both the pilot and trailing vehicles must display a “WIDE LOAD” sign mounted on the top of the cab. The design of this sign should allow for easy mounting on car top carriers or similar flat surfaces. It should be adjustable to stand upright when in use and fold flat onto the carrier when not in use. The sign must be kept clean at all times.
